St Werburghs City Farm

Horticultural Training

The Horticultural Training Unit is an integral part of St Werburghs City Farm. We are a small unit, with two members of staff working with a maximum of six people a day. We are helped by volunteers who provide additional support to our trainees, all of whom are adults with learning difficulties. We operate year round providing a safe, well equipped environment in which people can learn new skills and grow in confidence and independence. We value everyone's contribution and integrate people into the daily life of the Farm wherever possible. Both the Farm and the nearby community garden in which we work is open to all, and this gives our trainees the opportunity for social interaction with the wider community in safety.

Our trainees learn about organic horticulture and are involved in helping to maintain our large community garden, as well as growing plants for sale in our large greenhouse. Trainees take part in activities such as seed sowing and plant propagation, preparing ground for planting, maintaining existing garden areas, presenting plants for sale, gardening-related craft activities and harvesting. We produce herbs, flowers and vegetables. We have recently started an training programme accredited by the National Open College Network.
